Excerpt from First Explorations of Kentucky: Doctor Thomas Walker's Journal; Also Colonel Christopher Gist's Journal
Hen explorations of the unknown wilderness west of the Alleghanies were begun a century and a half ago, it was customary for explorers to keep journals of what they saw and did. Some of these journals have been. Published, others remain in the original manuscripts, and yet others have perished. As a matter of course, where there are only the original manuscripts, they are not attainable except through the individual owners; and even of those that have been published, some have grown so scarce as to be practically inaccessible to the general reader. Some of these journals are too valuable as his toric documents to continue of use to so few readers and to remain in such danger of being lost forever on account of their singleness or fewness of copies.

This book takes readers back to the 18th century, a time when the vast wilderness west of the Appalachian Mountains remained largely unexplored by Europeans. It focuses on the experiences of two men, Doctor Thomas Walker and Colonel Christopher Gist, who ventured into the unknown, charting territories that would eventually become part of Kentucky and Ohio. The author delves into the motivations behind these explorations, which were driven by a combination of curiosity, the desire for land, and the growing rivalry between the English and the French. Through the detailed journals kept by the explorers, readers gain a vivid understanding of the challenges and triumphs of early American frontier life. The book reveals the stark beauty of the untouched land, the constant threat of Native American encounters, and the resilience of the men who braved the dangers to carve a future for themselves and their nation.
