Synopsis

Excerpt from The Design Collection: Selected Objects

The archeologists would probably also observe that object-using humans had group preoccupations. One group was concerned first of all with the manner in which separate parts are joined together. For such people a design must have been valuable according to the number of opportunities it afforded to connect different parts, preferably made of different materials. A second group evidently valued objects of minimal incident: few parts, no joints, and if possible no clue as to what purpose the object might have served.

The book discusses the tension between utilitarian design and the pursuit of aesthetic appeal, as well as the role of technology in shaping our interactions with objects. It also examines the concept of "planned obsolescence," and the cultural impact of our increasing consumption of disposable goods.
