Synopsis
This book explores the sequential patterns of action within complex and non-routine work processes, using a combination of theory, case study, and grammatical modeling to illuminate their structure and regularity. The author argues that organizational routines are best understood as sets of functionally similar patterns from which members enact specific performances, rather than fixed or automatic responses. This perspective reconciles seemingly contradictory views on organizational routines as both constrained and agentic, emerging from the interplay between organizational structures, social and cognitive processes, and the situated nature of work. The book provides a detailed and innovative methodology for studying the sequential structure of organizational routines and illustrates it with an in-depth analysis of a software support function. The findings challenge traditional definitions of routines from the organizational literature and highlight the need for new conceptualizations that account for both structure and agency in repetitive organizational processes.
