Excerpt from Mental Discipline, or Hints on the Cultivation of Intellectual and Moral Habits: Addressed Particularly to Students in Theology and Young Preachers
In the course of the Author's Academic engagements. Considerations relative to various points of mental disci pline have been perpetually occurring to his mind, and have been very frequently suggested by him to his young friends and pupils, without being reduced to writing. He has, however, entertained the idea that an attempt to convey them in a form more explicit, connected and per manent, might not be unacceptable to them, and perhaps not altogether without benefit to others. He by no means imagines that the following pages embrace all the princi ples connected with the subject of Mental Discipl'me; he presents them to the reader simply as Ifints, with the hope that they will be lbund to comprehend those princi ples of Intellectual and Moral Improvement which may be justly deemed of the highest importance.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book offers wisdom about the education and personal growth necessary for those who teach. The author draws from philosophers including John Locke and Thomas Brown to propose that, for teachers, the development of mental habits is more important than the acquisition of knowledge alone. Rather than transmitting truth, the author argues, the most important part of education is to cultivate mental habits that will enable a student to become a lifelong learner and a good and thoughtful person. While intended for those who will teach theology, this book is also useful for anyone interested in understanding how best to cultivate intellectual and moral habits for greater fulfillment and impact.
