Excerpt from Horae Sabbaticae: Reprint of Articles Contributed to the Saturday Review
Now dominion and liberty are mutually exclusive, and, as. Rights are no more than ascertained and definite branches of liberty, it follows that they are constituted by law, which is the will of the ruler that as against the ruler no one can have any rights, inasmuch as the existence of rights is dependent on the ruler's will and that the ruler lies under no duties towards his subjects, for duties are the correlatives of rights nor towards other rulers, for, as regards them, he is absolute and independent.
It would be a great injustice to Hobbes to suppose that he denied the existence or obligation of morality. On the contrary, he strongly urges it on rulers as well as on their subjects. Morality is, according to his view, the law of God. He draws out at length a scheme of morality, or the laws of nature, of which he enumerates twenty; but these, he observes, are not properly laws, because they are not commands, except in so far as and inasmuch as 'they are de livered by God in holy Scriptures 'for the sacred Scripture is the speech of God commanding over all things by greatest right.' This is the foundation of Hobbes's theory of government. In his own language it takes a form which is open to some objection, and looks highly paradoxical. The commonest objection to it is in his use of the words 'right' and 'contract,' which we have intentionally avoided as much as possible in the summary of his views given above. His use of these terms no doubt lays him open to the charge.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is an examination of various social and political theories largely as they were conceived during the 17th century, particularly those pertaining to power, sovereignty, and religion. The author dissects society as he sees it, including its foundational structures and dynamics, in an effort to build a theoretical framework for stable government. He was writing during a period of great upheaval in England, which had recently been wracked by civil war, and as such many of his ideas are shaped by his horror of strife. The author takes a somewhat absolutist position, advocating for a supreme power he equates with the biblical Leviathan, a massive biblical sea monster. He believed that only the establishment of such a power could prevent the descent into chaos he saw playing out around him. The book is both timely and timeless, an examination of government that is as applicable to its day as it is to ours. It is a work of great intellectual depth, from one of the most important philosophers of the 17th century, that offers valuable insights on the perennial questions of how societies are formed, organized, and kept in harmony.
