Synopsis
This book introduces a simple method of teaching mental arithmetic. In the mid-19th century, the author taught this method to children and adults with great success. The method demonstrated in this book has three main parts: 1. Simple addition and subtraction exercises to be performed entirely in the mind. 2. Multiplication and division tables to be memorized by rote, then practiced with simple exercises to be performed in the mind. 3. Further practice with increasingly complex problems to gain more comfort and confidence. The author includes notes and suggestions throughout for teachers using the text to guide their students. The book explains how the method develops a student's mental abilities by providing them with a deep understanding of the mathematical concepts the exercises present.
