Synopsis

This book is an exploration of finite element problems and elliptic issues seen from the perspective of iterative substructuring methods. These methods are domain decomposition methods in which the often very large linear systems of algebraic equations, which arise when elliptic problems are discretized by finite differences or finite elements, are solved with the aid of solvers for the same or similar equations defined on subregions. Finite element problems can often be partitioned into subproblems corresponding to subregions into which the region is partitioned or from which is originally assembled. In this book, the author establishes an extension theorem for finite element functions on regions with Lipschitz boundaries, similar to well known results on Sobolev spaces. Due to this, the author can assume that the subproblems are solved exactly, which is a unique approach given other works that focus on inexact solvers. The methods within the book also lead to improved algorithms already for uniprocessor systems and two substructures, as well as providing global transportation of information in each step of the calculations.
