Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the fascinating legend of Pope Sylvester II, a figure shrouded in mystery and controversy. During his reign from 999 to 1003, Gerbert of Aurillac, as he was known before becoming pope, gained renown for his exceptional knowledge of science, mathematics, and astronomy. His brilliance and ambition, however, fueled suspicions that he had acquired his wisdom through a pact with the devil, a rumor that persisted centuries after his death. The author delves into medieval society's fears of the unknown and their tendency to attribute extraordinary occurrences to supernatural forces. This engaging exploration of the legend of Sylvester II highlights the complex interplay between human ambition, superstition, and the enduring power of myth.
