Excerpt from Miners' Pocket-Book: A Reference Book for Miners, Mine Surveyors, Geologists, Mineralogists, Millmen, Assayers, Metallurgists, and Metal Merchants, All Over the World
The preparation Of the present little volume has been undertaken with a view of supplying the want, and with a desire to embrace under one pair of covers information on the many and various branches of science with which the Mining Engineer is called upon at times to make himself familiar. Futhermore the economic or commercial side of the industry has not been overlooked, for the ultimate aim of all mining is financial gain.
Obviously it would be impossible to compile such a volume without utilising the published, and in some cases unpublished, work of others; but an endeavour has been made to acknowledge the source of all borrowed statements, except where disclosure has not been desired. This opportunity is taken to publicly thank those whose kind assistance has contributed so much to the value of this pocket-book; specially so to H. D. Hoskold for his valuable Traverse Tables on pp. 401-445.
