Group the Chazy, Bird's Eye, Black River, and Tren ton Groups. It is the oldest known fossiliferous limestone, is calcareo-silicious in character, as its name indicates, and is the lowest member of the series capable of yielding either hydraulic lime or cement. In many localities, it exhibits the water-lined laminae of deposition in a marked and conspicuous degree.
Three distinct masses Of this rock are usually Observed wherever it presents a fully developed outcrop.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is a comprehensive examination of the properties and applications of limes, hydraulic cements, and mortars, materials essential to construction during the 19th century. The author, a civil engineer working under the authority of the Engineer Bureau of the War Department, draws upon his extensive research and experiments conducted in 1861 to explore the complex science behind these materials. The book delves into the geological origins of different types of lime and cement, tracing their presence in various regions of the United States, from the Appalachian Mountains to the Mississippi River. The author analyzes the composition of these materials, meticulously detailing the role of key ingredients like silica, alumina, and magnesia in determining their hydraulic properties. The book then explores the practical aspects of using these materials, offering detailed instructions on mixing, applying, and testing mortars for different purposes. It also examines the limitations of these materials, discussing factors such as their durability under exposure to air, water, and frost. Through detailed scientific analysis and practical observations, the author illuminates the intricate relationship between the geological composition, chemical properties, and practical applications of these essential building materials, providing valuable insights for builders and engineers of the time.
