This book, the first in a collection of epic poems, opens in the morning on a plain near the hill of Mora, on the borders of the heath of Moilena, in Ulster. The action of the poem takes place in the midst of things, as is the tradition of epic poems, and the preceding events are introduced as episodes arising immediately from the situation of affairs. The story begins with a description of Cairbar, a usurper of the Irish throne, and the gathering of his chiefs as they assemble an army to quell an invasion of their shores by Fingal, the king of those Caledonians who inhabited the Western coast of Scotland. Upon the arrival of Fingal, the Irish fall back to the army of Cathmor, the brother of Cairbar, who has advanced to the banks of the river Lubar, on the heath of Moilena. After mourning over his slain grandson, Oscar, and ordering his body to be carried to Morven for burial, Fingal is told the particulars of the murder of Cormac, the rightful king of Ireland, who had been murdered by Cairbar at Temora, the royal palace. The first book concludes as Fillan, Fingal's son, is sent to observe the motions of Cathmor by night. The book provides historical and literary context for the broader work and sets the stage for the epic battles to come.
