Excerpt from The Printers, Stationers and Bookbinders of London and Westminster in the Fifteenth Century: A Series of Four Lectures Delivered at Cambridge in the Lent Term, MDCCCIC
In the same year as the Canterbury Tales, appeared two other illustrated books, the Fables of Esop, and the Golden Legend. The Esop has one large full - page cut of Esop used as a frontispiece and which is found only in the Queen's copy at Windsor, and no less than a hundred and eighty five smaller cuts, the work of two if not three engravers, one being evidently the man who made the cuts for the chess-book.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is a comprehensive overview of the early years of printing in England, written by a leading expert. It focuses on two interlocking stories: firstly, the arrival of the new technology and how it developed over the following decades, and secondly, the activities of the people who brought the press to England and those who continued to run it. The narrative starts before the first press arrived in England and continues after the death of William Caxton. The author argues that the printed book was already a familiar object in England before the first press was set up in Westminster Abbey, and that early printers from the Continent were attracted to England in part because the country had a ready market for their books. The book also explores how English printing shops operated on a day-to-day basis, how they marketed their products, and how they defended their interests.
