This book is a systematic elementary introduction to the modern theory of the continuum as a type of serial order. The theory of serial order underpins the definition of irrational numbers and makes possible a rigorous treatment of the real number system of algebra. The book begins with a discussion of one-to-one correspondence between two classes or collections, and then introduces simply ordered classes, or series. It continues with a discussion of discrete series, especially the type ω of natural numbers, and dense series, especially the type η of the rational numbers. Finally, the book defines continuous series, especially the type 0 of the real numbers, and briefly introduces the theory of the so-called well-ordered series, and Cantor's transfinite numbers. This book is of interest to all those studying the foundations of mathematics.
