The Exhibition Building requires much decoration, for it is only wall space. From pillar to pillar, and from wall to wall throughout the building were ropes of evergreens, inter mingled with which were bannerets of every variety of colour. Facing the Governor, and on the balustrade of the band balcony, was one of the mottoes of the Frere family.

This book captures the grandeur of a momentous Cape Town banquet held in 1879 to celebrate the return of Sir Bartle Frere, the Governor of the Cape, and High Commissioner for South Africa. The banquet was held to celebrate his return from a nine-month tour of Natal, the Transvaal, and Griqualand West, a tour that had been marred by conflict. Despite this, the celebratory tone of the banquet is not one of triumph but of resolve. The author skilfully uses the speeches made at the banquet to craft a narrative that reveals the complex political and social context of the time in which the dinner was held. Insight is given into how the high stakes and grave responsibilities faced by the leaders of South Africa affected their views on the policies of the day, particularly with regard to the Zulu people. The description of the banquet and its context is a rich and evocative way of exploring the themes of unity, security, and self-governance that were so important in South Africa in the late 19th century. The insights the attendees of the banquet and the author give into these themes provide valuable context to the complex history of South Africa.
