This book gives a thorough examination of hourly wages and work hours for conductors and motormen employed by electric street railways operating in Canada between 1914 and 1919. Comprised of information gathered through communication with the various companies and municipalities operating these railways, it includes data on 59 different lines spanning 51 companies and municipalities, as well as 55 separate statements on wages and hours. The author analyzed fluctuations in hours and wages during this period, spanning the years of World War I, which brought with them a variety of socioeconomic shifts. The book examines the working conditions, benefits, and challenges faced by these employees during a critical era in labor history, providing valuable insights into the evolution of the street railway industry and the broader labor movement in Canada.
