Synopsis

Excerpt from The Grand Question Resolved; What We Must Do to Be Saved: Instructions for a Holy Life

I. Begin at home, and know tnyself. Consider what it is to be a manfi Thou art made a nobler creature than the brutes. They serve thee, and are governed by thee and death ends all their pains and pleasures. But thou hast reason to rule thyself and them to know thy God, and foresee thy end, and know thy way, and do thy duty. Thy reason, and free-will, and executive power, are part of the image of God upon thy nature: so IS thy dominion over the brutes, as, under him, thou art their owner, their ruler, and their end. But thy holy wisdom, and goodness, and ability, is the chief part of his image on which thy happi ness depends. Thou hast a soul that cannot be satisfied in knowing, till thy knowledge reach to God himself z'r nor can it be disposed by any other 5 nor can it or the socie ties of the world, be well governed according to its nature, without regard to his sovereign authority and without the hopes and fears of joy and misery hereafter 51 nor can it be happy§ in anything but seeing and loving and de lighting in this God as he is revealed in the other world. And is this nature given thee in vain P If the nature of all things be fitted to its use and end, then it must be so with thine.

About the Author

Richard Baxter (1615-1691) was a prominent English churchman and peacemaker who sought unity among Protestants. Born in Rowton to parents who undervalued education, he was largely self-taught. At age twenty-three he was ordained into the Church of England. Baxter became even better known for his prolific writing, with more than two hundred works to his name. His devotional classic, "The Saints' Everlasting Rest", was one of the most widely read books of the century. When asked what deviations should be permitted from the Anglican Book of Common Prayer, he created an entirely new one, "Reformed Liturgy", in two weeks. His autobiography and his pastoral guide, "The Reformed Pastor", are still widely read today.

The author emphasizes the importance of understanding and accepting the nature of being human: acknowledging our innate selfishness, pride, and sensuality while also recognizing our capacity for goodness, wisdom, and love. By understanding ourselves, we can move through life with greater mindfulness and intention, embracing the transformative power of holiness and godliness. The author encourages readers to approach life with an unwavering belief in the existence of a higher power, urging them to rely on a savior and sanctifier to guide their steps. He asserts the importance of overcoming temptation, practicing humility, and actively seeking paths to holiness, rather than merely professing faith. The book offers a comprehensive exploration of the key values that underpin a virtuous life, including love, hope, faith, and charity, and it emphasizes the significance of living a life in accordance with these principles. This book provides a timeless and practical guide to living an ethical and fulfilling life, offering valuable insights into the nature of humanity and the path to redemption.
