Synopsis

This book develops a theory for predicting the motion of ships in a seaway under various conditions. Ships have been treated as freely floating rigid bodies under external forces such as propeller thrust. The amplitude of surface waves is assumed to be small, and the ship is assumed to have the shape of a thin disk. These assumptions have allowed the description of ship movement with small oscillations relative to a motion at finite speed. Within these limitations, the theory developed in this book is quite general and encompasses situations where arbitrary assumptions are not made about the interaction of the ship with the water. The only assumptions made concern the coupling between the different degrees of freedom of the ship and the waves present on the surface of the sea.
