Excerpt from Medieval Studies: Second Revised Edition, With Three Appendices
As the plan of these pamphlets renders it impossible to give a crowd of references which would only weary the general reader, the Author is glad to give a definite guarantee of his good faith by offering four pages in each pamphlet to any competent critic who will undertake to convict him of serious error. If his statements are inaccurate, he thus under takes to supply their refutation at his own expense. He has already made a similar offer in vain to many Romanist controversialists, includ ing all the writers of the Catholic Truth Society; and he now repeats the offer, in order to enable the general reader to realize how strongly Anglicanism is supported on many important points by the most incontro vertible medieval testimony.

This compelling text examines the validity of claims that pre-Reformation monastic life was idyllic and free of the hardships exposed during the investigations conducted under the directive of Henry VIII. The book questions the silence on monastic practices and morals in episcopal registers, which apologists present as evidence of monastic virtue. It argues that the absence of documentary evidence of wrongdoing does not equate to innocence, given the limited scope and selective nature of visitations, which were primarily aimed at uncovering grave breaches of discipline. The author substantiates this argument by examining evidence from visitation records, specifically those of Bishop Nicke of Norwich, which contradict Cardinal Gasquet's assertions of monastic discipline and swift punishment for wrongdoing. Despite the discovery of serious offenses, including theft, murder, and sexual misconduct, the book notes a remarkable lack of commensurate penalties, highlighting the impunity that often characterized medieval monastic life. This book's insights challenge the popular portrayal of pre-Reformation monasticism as a haven of virtue and expose a deeper level of moral laxity and institutional failure. Its analysis provides valuable perspectives for understanding the complexities of medieval monastic life and the factors that led to its decline.
