Synopsis

This book, a second report, presents the findings of the author's extensive work on economic zoology, particularly the injurious and beneficial insects, mites and other creatures in the English Midlands between 1904-1905. The author served as an Honorary Secretary for the Association of Economic Biologists, a group dedicated to applied study in the field. The report covers 93 different animals, including such creatures as the root-knot eelworm, various species of woodlice, mites, aphids and moths, as well as several flies, beetles and wasps. The author was consulted regarding mites in apple tree buds, submits an update on the spread of the apple sucker, and recommends soap and sulfur treatments for black currant gall mites. The author gives particular attention to the damage caused by the larvae of the Gooseberry Sawfly, which has been exceptionally plentiful during the reporting period. The report is a valuable record of the author's work in economic zoology with insights into the challenges faced by farmers during the period and the development of early pest control techniques.
