Synopsis

Excerpt from For the Blue and Gold: A Tale of Life at the University of California

Berkeley Station is the scene, the time the middle of August, when the University town wakes up after a three months' sleep and takes on a livelier hue with the Opening of a new college year. A train from the city has just arrived, and, as a result, the reader is, in the foregoing dialogue, introduced to James Rawson, sub-freshman, and to the leading spirit of a band of jolly sophomores. According to immemorial custom the latter is gathered at the station to see how many green freshmen can be baited.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book follows James Rawson, a young man from Southern California, as he embarks on his journey to higher education at the University of California, Berkeley in 1901. The author immerses us in the world of the university during this era, capturing the unique challenges and opportunities faced by a working-class student in a time of rapid social change. We experience the anxieties of the entrance exams, the camaraderie of student life, and the complexities of navigating a world that prioritizes athletics and wealth. We see James grapple with the tensions between his own aspirations and the expectations of his peers. The author uses James's struggles to explore themes of class, social mobility, and the changing role of higher education in American society. The book captures the spirit of a turning point, where the ideals of self-reliance and hard work clash with the increasingly competitive realities of the early 20th century. In doing so, the author sheds light on the social dynamics of a rapidly evolving university landscape. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
