The cotemporaries of John Fitch have nearly all passed from the stage of life. To a new generation appeal is made for jus tice to the memory of one whose fame has long been obscured by an usurped credit, improperly allowed to another. If the present age does not, posterity, it is hoped, will, reverse, as far as is now possible, the foreboding prophecy of the derided and despised genius, written in 1791: The day will come when some more powerful man will get fame and riches from my inven tion but nobody will believe that poor John Fitch can do any thing worthy of attention.
