This book, written by an expert on the Sulu language, comprehensively details how to transcribe the Arabic alphabet into Roman script, essential for researchers and anyone else wishing to learn the Sulu language. Most of the books available on the Sulu language are written in Arabic script, which makes them inaccessible to learners who do not read Arabic. This book provides a clear system to transliterate the Arabic characters into Roman letters, enabling users to learn Sulu regardless of their familiarity with Arabic. The book begins with an introduction to the history and development of the Sulu language, setting it within the context of other Philippine regional languages. It then provides a thorough exploration of the phonetic and writing systems of Sulu. The author tackles the complex array of consonant and vowel sounds, as well as the use of diacritical marks, giving particular attention to the difficulties encountered when writing the language in Roman letters. This volume also includes an analysis of the writing of consonants, diphthongs, and numerals and concludes with an examination of specific foreign influences on Sulu orthography and an insightful discussion of the significance of the Sulu-Arabic script in the broader context of Malay and Arabic.
