Excerpt from The Harbours of England
Turner's Haréoum of England, as it is generally called, is a book which, for various reasons, has never received from readers of Mr. Ruskin's writings the attention it deserves. True, it has always been sought after by con noisseurs, and Collectors never fail with their eleven or twelve guineas whenever a set of Artist's Proofs of the First Edition of 1856 comes into the market. But to the General Reader the book with its twelve exquisitely delicate mezzotints - four of which Mr. Ruskin has declared to be among the very finest exe cuted by Turner from his marine subjects - is practically unknown.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is a visually-compelling and critically-acclaimed study of revered English painter J.M.W. Turner and his illustrative series on English maritime scenes. The author, himself an acclaimed artist and influential art critic, provides insightful commentary and analysis of the twelve mezzotint engravings that constitute Turner's "Harbours of England" series. In this book, he asserts that between 1750-1850, the world experienced an "Age of Boats" where boats and ships became subjects of high artistic value, and he chronicles the significance of this subject matter. He traces the evolution of marine art throughout history, discussing the work of previous masters, and places Turner's preoccupation with shipping in context with his other works. This book is a fascinating read for art lovers, maritime history buffs, and anyone interested in the enduring artistic legacy of J.M.W. Turner.
