Lafontaine, and entire scenes from Racine and Corneille Music and drawing were judiciously interspersed with his severer studies, and in the latter he acquired a pro ficiency which he used in after years in delineating the scenes and incidents of the French Revolution, and in illustrating his descriptions of his early life. HQ also re ceived, as a preparation for the French Polytechnic School, which he once thought of entering, a thorough course of mathematics. When the French Revolution destroyed the Catholic schools at Rennes, he followed up his studies assiduously at home.
