Hayne lived at a pivotal moment in the country's history, when the future of the young republic hung in the balance, and the debate over states' rights and nullification raged. This well-researched biography places Hayne at the heart of these momentous events, chronicling the orator's efforts to mediate between the Unionist views of South Carolina's political establishment and the rising tide of Southern secessionism. A meticulously crafted work based on a wealth of primary sources, this book serves as an essential contribution to understanding Hayne's critical role in shaping the course of American history.
