Synopsis
This book innovatively examines music as music, not merely as exercises in playing, singing, or theory. Beginning with the fundamentals of musical phraseology, this book guides the student towards an understanding of musical discourse. The author divides these studies into two parts: Part One covers themes and lyrics, phrases, and periods, while Part Two explores the inner life of music - imagination and feeling. These latter studies take in review the principal works of the classical and modern schools, examining how these works illustrate the relation between music and feeling. Ultimately, this book teaches students to engage with music on a deeper level, both as consumers and creators. The author leads the reader through a process of developing a consciousness of the inherent relation between music and feeling and does so by examining masterworks, which serve as the only complete and authoritative illustrations of this relation. Through this process, musical insights will sharpen, and the reader will develop a deeper understanding of both music and themselves.
