Synopsis

Excerpt from The Negro in the Yazoo-Mississippi Delta

In the state of Mississippi, between the 3zud and 3sth parallels of north latitude, its entire western border washed by the Mississippi river, and most of its eastern by the Yazoo, extending north from the confluence of those streams at a point just above the city of Vicks burg, lies the strip of territory known as the Yazoo Mississippi delta. The exact origin of the word delta, as applied to this region, is not clear; though it was probably a simple extension of the old and accepted use of the word, descriptive both of the character and of the peculiar formation of the land built up by the diverging mouths of large silt-bearing streams. The character of the soil certainly justifies such a conclusion, for it is entirely of alluvial formation, detritus deposited during thousands of years in which the Mississippi has poured out its muddy flood waters over the adjacent country.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book takes readers deep into the heart of the American South, specifically the Yazoo-Mississippi Delta region, to explore the unique relationship between white landowners and the Black population who work the land. Examining a region where Black people outnumber white people by a significant margin, the author provides a firsthand account of a complex social structure that evolved from the legacy of slavery. The author delves into the economic realities of the Delta, analyzing the different systems of labor, like sharecropping and renting, and illuminating the dynamics of power and dependency that shape the lives of both Black and white residents. Through vivid anecdotes and insightful observations, the author challenges prevailing assumptions about the South's racial landscape, arguing that the region's specific history has resulted in a surprisingly peaceful co-existence between the races. The author's keen understanding of the human element of this complex relationship sheds light on the psychological dynamics between Black and white residents and the enduring impact of slavery on their lives. This book offers a vital and nuanced perspective on a pivotal period in American history, reminding readers that the Southââ â¢s racial narrative is more multifaceted than simplistic generalizations allow.
