Excerpt from Titian
The chief authority on which this biography of Titian is based is the ponderous work on the same subject recently published in London, in two volumes, under the joint authorship of Crowe and Cavalcaselle. These gentlemen are eminent for laborious and con scientious research, and just and temperate criticism, as is shown in their preceding volumes on the history of Italian art, which have now become classical, and are generally used as ultimate authorities. In con nection with this work, the author has consulted and compared numerous other books relating to Titian and his paintings, - Gilbert's Cadore, Northcote, Ticozzi, Vasari, Taine, Blanc, &c.
