This book is a collection of early nineteenth-century letters written by a young army doctor assigned to the British West Indies. These personal observations offer insights into the realities of military life during that period when Britain actively maintained a large military presence abroad and was engaged in actions against France in the Caribbean. The author gives accounts of his experiences travelling to his posting in the West Indies, the daily life of a field medic, the political climate on the islands, and the culture and customs of the enslaved African population.
