This book is the diary of Major James Rennell, a British Army engineer who travelled through Bengal in what is now Bangladesh during 1764-67. Rennell's journals were compiled largely from his observations travelling India's waterways mapping the Ganges delta. His detailed account of the Ganges and its many tributaries presents an astonishingly detailed picture of Bengal in the mid-18th century. The rich descriptions of the landscape and its bustling life extend to the habits and customs of the people he encountered along his journey, as well as the political economy and trade of the region. At this time, the British East India Company was gaining political and economic power in the wake of the collapse of the Mughal Empire. Rennell's travel diaries help to piece together the complex political and commercial relationships of the period. As both an historical and geographical document, his work provides a unique glimpse into the Ganges and the lives of the people who relied upon it.
