Synopsis
This book is a magnificent collection of woodcut illustrations that adorned the early printed books of Spain and Portugal. This collection includes 1,050 woodcuts from books and broadsides printed between 1474 and 1561, many of which have not been reproduced since their original publication. Works from the fifteenth century are especially well represented, and some of the woodcuts are the only surviving evidence of lost books. These woodcuts provide essential insights into the rich literary tradition of the Iberian Peninsula and the development of printing technology in the region. The book elucidates the role that woodcuts played in the dissemination of ideas during the early modern period and establishes a firm foundation for further research into the history of the book in Spain and Portugal.
