Excerpt from Blätter Aus Dem Leben: A Story
IN offering an original German story to the reading public, the author makes no attempt to establish himself in the purely literary field of novel writing, and has therefore given less attention to that form and treat ment which are peculiar to the novel as a work of literary art. He has sought rather the fulfillment of a desire that there might be produced from the pen of an American an example of German prose. If, then, this little volume, which is essentially a short story, should find favor in the eyes of those who are fond of such things, or be used as subsidiary reading in college, the author would feel amply rewarded for a labor which has been a delight to him, and which, he hopes, will not be considered altogether futile by those into whose hands this book may have the good fortune to fall.
