Synopsis

Excerpt from Miscellany Presented to Kuno Meyer by Some of His Friends and Pupils on the Occasion of His Appointment to the Chair of Celtic Philology in the University of Berlin

Those historians who maintain that the legend is fraudulent and incredible, will naturally ask what value can be attached to such Opinions as these of mine i. A, to opinions Which deny the credibility of extant dependent evidence which assert the inexactness of the statements made in the primary, independent, but non-existent source of our knowledge and which maintain, nevertheless, that the legend is rooted in truth. But these are among the reasons why the legend must, as I have said already, be inscrutable to those who can only conceive its problems as the historian does.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book addresses the Lucius legend, which tells the story of a mythical British king who allegedly corresponded with Pope Eleutherius in the 2nd century AD. The legend has been the subject of much debate among historians, with various interpretations emerging over the centuries. The author carefully examines the legend and its evolution, considering how it has been influenced by different historical and chronological interpretations. They argue that the original Lucius legend was more denite and contained a specific annuary datum, a list of contemporary rulers, and references to the Pope and Emperors of Rome. However, this original record was lost, resulting in a fragmented and contradictory narrative. The author meticulously compares the accounts presented in the Liber Pontificalis, the Historia Ecclesiastica Gentis Anglorum, and the Historia Brittonum, highlighting discrepancies between them. They use this comparative analysis to reconstruct the likely content of the original Lucius legend, offering a fresh perspective that challenges traditional interpretations. Ultimately, the book provides an in-depth examination of the Lucius legend, shedding light on its historical complexities and thematic richness. It is a valuable contribution to the study of early British history and the evolution of ecclesiastical narratives. Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
