Synopsis

Excerpt from Artistic Creation and Cosmic Creation

I too shall join the philosophers and shall try to show that our question is not how the world came into being, but what sort of a thing the world is in its ultimate and simplest nature, within which we may legitimately say that creation takes place and things are produced and events come to be and are caused. I am sure that if I say Spirit is there I cannot rest content with using this picture of the most developed thing we know, without asking how it came to be. But I know also how hard it is to avoid asking the question even if the elementary world is cor rectly conceived, and I too am beset with the pictorial habit of going outside the world as it were and asking for its author. It seems to me, therefore, useful for myself and perhaps for others to inquire first what creation is where we are familiar with it, and to use the answer to that problem to interpret what creation must mean when we speak of a creative principle in the whole world. It may be that to find the source of the world in a spirit is to make a mistaken use of the analogy of artistic or other finite creation. At any rate the first inquiry is feasible.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the nature of creation, both artistic and cosmic. The author, writing in 1927, grapples with the philosophical implications of the creative process, drawing comparisons between the artistic act and the creation of the universe itself. Rejecting the notion of a divine creator separate from the world, the author argues that the universe is self-creating, a dynamic process of growth and change where "mind" and "matter" are inseparable aspects of an underlying reality. The author examines the work of art as a fusion of spirit and material, demonstrating how the artist's intention and the physical medium combine to create a new entity imbued with meaning. This fusion, the author argues, offers a key to understanding the universe's fundamental nature, where a "nisus," or creative drive, impels the world toward new forms of existence. Drawing on the ideas of philosophers like Spinoza and Bergson, the author presents a vision of a universe constantly evolving, a dynamic process that gives rise to ever-increasing complexity and the emergence of consciousness and value. Ultimately, this book challenges traditional notions of creation and offers a compelling view of the universe as a self-creating system, a dynamic process that is both awe-inspiring and profoundly human. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
