Excerpt from Scientific Results of Cruise VII of the Carnegie During 1928-1929 Under Command of Captain J. P. Ault, Vol. 3: Oceanography; Ocean Atmospheric-Electric Results
But this cruise was tragically the last of the seven great adventures represented by the world cruises of the vessel. Early in the afternoon of November 29, 1929, while she was in the harbor at Apia completing the storage of 2000 gallons of gasoline, there was an explosion as a result of which Captain Ault and cabin boy Anthony Kolar lost their lives, five officers and seamen were injured, and the vessel with all her equipment was destroyed.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is part of a scientific series involving cruises taken by a nonmagnetic ship called the Carnegie. Its objective was to study the electrical conditions in the lower atmosphere, particularly over oceans, in order to understand the characteristics of the earth's electric charge and the conductivity of the atmosphere. Previous cruises had used eye-reading instruments, but this expedition was the first to use recording instruments for continuous measurements of potential gradient and conductivity. The author explains that electrical conditions over the oceans are more easily studied due to fewer fluctuations and a simpler set of conditions as compared to over land. The book's approach is interdisciplinary, considering parameters such as radioactive matter in the earth and air, along with penetrating radiation coming from cosmic rays, to name a few. The scientists also studied nuclei concentration, and the penetrating radiation. By presenting the findings, the author illustrates the impact of various factors on the electrical conditions of the atmosphere.
