The author meticulously examines Jasper's renowned sermon, "The Sun Do Move," delivered in Richmond, Virginia, in 1882. This sermon, based on a literal interpretation of the Bible, ignited both controversy and fervent support, reflecting the complex social and intellectual landscape of the post-Reconstruction era. The text explores the theological underpinnings of Jasper's argument, his passionate defense of biblical literalism, and the cultural context that shaped his worldview. The author situates Jasper's beliefs within the broader history of African American religious thought, illuminating the ways in which Black communities navigated faith, science, and social change during a tumultuous period. This book offers a thought-provoking journey into the life and legacy of a preacher who challenged conventional wisdom and left an indelible mark on American religious discourse.
