This book explores the life and career of Richard Cosway, a miniature painter and Royal Academician who is considered one of the most brilliant miniaturists of the 18th century. Born in Devon around 1742, Cosway moved to London as a teenager and began studying at Shipley's drawing school, where he quickly gained recognition for his exceptional talent. In 1760, he exhibited a work at the Society of Arts and won a prize. He became an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1770 and a full member in 1771. Cosway's miniatures were highly sought after by the aristocracy and royalty, and he painted portraits of many notable figures, including the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Devonshire, and Maria Cosway, his wife. His work is characterized by its delicate brushwork, vibrant colors, and intimate portrayal of his subjects. Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
