This book provides a chronological abstract of inquisitions post mortem made in the county of Lancaster and presents them in chronological order, allowing readers to see how the land of the north-west was held in feudal tenure by the leading families of that county. The inquisitions are drawn from the records held in the Tower of London, the British Library, and the archives of the duchy of Lancaster. 142 abstracts of inquisitions are presented, ranging from 1312 to 1457, each giving an overview of the social, historical, and economic fabric of each inquisition, providing insights into everything from the structure of society to the details of individual lives and everyday activities of ordinary people. The text has been adapted and modernised to be made accessible to a wide range of readers, and the result is a fascinating glimpse into the history of the medieval county Palatine of Lancaster and its people.
