Excerpt from Family and Genealogical Sketches
Scotsmen aye reckon frae an ill hour, says an ancient national proverb, and so, perchance, one of the race may be excused if at the beginning of even a slight undertaking his first thought is of a churchyard and in the present instance it is, in some ways, not inappropriate that it should be so. Some time ago, in talking of our family, we regretted that almost all who knew anything of the past had gradually disappeared, and that those who were falling into the first rank had little infor mation either as regards their forebears or their kith and kin at least as compared with certain of our relatives who in their day had been the recognised sennachies in a wide circle of friends. We regretted, too, that those of our people who might come after us were likely to be even less informed when still lingering traditions would have finally died out under new conditions of life, and when any who might feel an awakening interest in such matters would have difficulty in discovering ancient lines and links of connection which are well within our vlew.
