Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This play, written in the early 20th century, follows the trials and tribulations of a harried young businessman named Hamilton McDowell. While Hamilton's life is usually filled with the drudgery of business and countless national association meetings, a change in circumstance finds him arriving home for lunch and expecting to surprise his wife with quite the treat. Unfortunately, Hamilton finds that his plans are upended when he discovers his wife, Nellie, has succumbed to the temptations of a bargain sale at Sells Department store and has returned with a chaotic array of oddly marked -down items. Among the purchases are dried beef, stale bread, an assortment of loud neckties, gloves fit for only one hand, cigars, shoes that are too small, and a broken safety razor. In the midst of Hamilton's frustration and Nellie's excitement, the couple discovers that they have left their baby at the department store. Hamilton attempts to rectify the situation by calling the store, but the couple soon finds themselves caught in a frustrating bureaucratic maze. They decide to visit the store in person and are greeted by a peculiar messenger who mistakes them for neither the baby's mother nor father. The mix -up is eventually resolved, and they are finally reunited with their child. Throughout this ordeal, Nellie learns the perils of bargain hunting, while Hamilton gains a new appreciation for his wife's enthusiasm and love for their child. This book offers a humorous look at the domestic trials and tribulations faced by early 20th -century couples, highlighting the enduring themes of love, family, and the occasional chaos that life throws their way. Despite the outdated specific references to department stores, clothing, and prices, the play's central themes remain relevant to modern readers.
