Synopsis
This book, an autobiography of a young man, involves his time spent in Chicago after meeting the author on a voyage where he was introduced to the book 'Indomitable Man' by Hartley Sylvester. While in Chicago, he meets John Pengard, a peculiar man who is the owner of a bookshop that intrigues the narrator. The narrator becomes determined to learn more about Pengard and stumbles upon a mystery surrounding him. As he delves deeper into the investigation of Pengard's past, the narrator begins to reflect on the strange and memorable experiences of his youth and an unusual phenomenon which has haunted him all his life. At once a deeply personal and highly original story, this book offers a complex look at one man’s coming-of-age during a time of great societal upheaval.
