The difficulty in literally translating a story from one language to another, and especially from the Indian tongue to the English, will make it hard to convey to the reader of this story the real sense of humor that the Indian children see in it when it is told to them.

About the Author:

Adams teaches high school physics, chemistry, computers, photography, world history, and foreign languages at Pleasant Hill High School in Pleasant Hill, Oregon and is the Webmaster for his school district. He also teaches chemistry at Marylhurst University near Portland, Oregon. He holds a B.A. in chemistry from California State University, Los Angeles, and an M.A. in physcis, biology, and computer science from the University of Oregon. His hobbies include photography, calligraphy, science fiction and atrocious puns.

Deborah L. Nichols is the William J. Bryant Professor of anthropology at Dartmouth College.

Adams, a historian and legal representative for the Delaware Indians before his death in 1921, attempted to preserve the culture and traditions of his people through the written word and photography. These 22 tales are vital because they show the importance of the natural world in Native American religion, the social customs of the Delaware, and their reverence for issues of integrity and spiritual values.
