Excerpt from The Art of Letter Painting Made Easy
Following Chapters were commenced with the intention of adding them to the 5th Edition of my Treatise on Steam Boilers, in consequence of having had numerous enquiries respecting the proper size of chimney for boiler-work. The information is, however, likely to be more useful in its present form, hence the appearance of this little book.

This book, the result of the author's extensive research, is a valuable resource for those wishing to understand the primary power systems used in boiler and factory chimneys. It begins by examining the basic principles of chimney draught, including the crucial relationship between temperature differences, gas density, and the force of the draught. The author provides practical formulas for calculating the theoretical velocity and volume of the gases discharged from the chimney and discusses factors that influence these values. The book also explores the complex relationship between chimney height and draught, emphasizing that increasing height does not always lead to a proportional increase in draught force. The author presents a comprehensive analysis of the various sources of resistance to the flow of gases through the chimney and provides empirical formulas for quantifying these resistances. The book delves into the topic of chimney stability, addressing the lateral pressure exerted by wind and the potential for structural failure. The author presents established formulas for calculating the moment of stability and the moment of pressure, emphasizing the need for a safety factor to prevent overturning. The concept of frictional tenacity, which resists the horizontal shifting of bed joints, is also discussed. The book's insights on chimney stability are crucial for ensuring the structural integrity of these critical industrial components.
