The author divides the history of ventilation into five eras and places himself in the fifth era of ventilation, beginning in 1877, the date of publication. His aspiration is to expand this theory of ventilation to mines, but acknowledges a lack of data to pursue the expansion at the time of writing. The author thoroughly examines the causes of the need for ventilation - listing five main reasons - as well as discussing sources of contamination, warming, mechanics of air, temperatures, and humidity. He makes the case that ventilation should be based on scientific principles.
