Synopsis
This book is a collection of essays written in the early 20th century by W.J. Robinson, urging for significant reforms in the United States. The centerpieces of Robinson's proposed reforms are the introduction of compulsory sterilization to prevent the propagation of undesirable traits, such as feeblemindedness and criminality, and a universal marriage license requirement to include a certificate of freedom from transmissible diseases such as syphilis and gonorrhea. Robinson's arguments for these reforms, which he terms Practical Eugenics, are as follows: the sterilization of those deemed unfit for procreation would reduce the number of individuals within the lowest social strata who burden society; sexually transmitted diseases would be curtailed if potential marriage partners were required to demonstrate they were free of infection prior to receiving a marriage license. The author was emphatic in their belief that these reforms were absolutely essential for the betterment of human society, arguing that society had a moral imperative to protect its most vulnerable members, who were disproportionately represented among the feebleminded, criminal, and diseased.
