Synopsis
This book compares five distinct methods of learning serial rote material: starting over, going back one step, not correcting errors, correcting errors as they occur, or repeating the error. The author’s experiment, conducted on children, tested each method on two tasks: a punch board maze and a rational learning test involving numbers and letters. The results showed that starting over again on making an error was the most efficient method, significantly outperforming the others in terms of mean errors. The book also examines the intercorrelations between methods, variability in performance, and the ranking of methods. It explores factors such as practice effects and transfer effects, which are inherent to the rotation method used. The author concludes that the method of starting over again on making an error is superior for learning serial rote material, both motor and verbal, and could have applications in school work and other settings requiring such learning.
