Excerpt from Glinka: Masters of Russian Music
The influence of Russlan and Ludmilla was more subtle and much less speedily felt. In the late fifties it was commonly voted tedious by the average music lover in Petrograd. It had captured the esteem of a few progressive musicians, but even as late as in 1 870 it was thought necessary by the Opera Directorate to make huge cuts in the score.

This book is a biographical and critical study of a pivotal figure in Russian music: Mikhail Glinka, the composer widely recognized as the father of Russian musical nationalism. The author delves into Glinka's life, tracing his journey from a childhood marked by a delicate constitution and a love for folk music to his emergence as a composer who challenged the prevailing dominance of Italian opera in Russia. The book explores the social and cultural context surrounding Glinka's career, highlighting the rise of a new Russian patriotism in the wake of the Napoleonic Wars and the growing desire for a distinct national musical identity. Through detailed accounts of Glinka's creative process, the author illuminates the thematic depth of his two operas, *A Life for the Tsar* and *Russlan and Ludmilla*, and their profound impact on subsequent generations of Russian composers. The book offers a fascinating glimpse into the evolution of Russian musical nationalism and its enduring legacy.
