Synopsis
This book is the result of an archaeological survey carried out in the county of Sutherland. Published as part of a series studying the ancient monuments, historic structures, and prehistoric remains of Scotland, this volume catalogues the antiquities found in Sutherland. It includes sites connected to the prehistoric inhabitants of the area as well as structures dating from later periods, from the Early Iron Age through to the Middle Ages. The survey was undertaken at the request of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland as part of an effort to provide a comprehensive record of the cultural heritage of Scotland. The book includes a detailed description of each site along with any pertinent historical, architectural, or archaeological background and most include references to notable literary, historical, or folkloric associations. Every location is illustrated with photographs and maps, and scaled plans and ground plans of many sites are provided.
