The second is that of enlisting their cooperation and that of teach ers Of mathematics in the preparation of similar problems through the study of facts. The larger pamphlet which is pro duced by these competitive efforts will in time be placed at the service of teachers of mathematics or of those who prepare texts in arithmetic. It is not desired to give the children of our schools any unfair bias, but simply to present to them some facts to the knowledge of which they are entitled. It is hoped that from a familiarity with such facts presented in connection with the various subjects of study, a broader patriotism and higher ideals may result. It should be noted by the teacher that the formulation of problems from phenomena of our present environment and the use of mathematical processes to solve actual problems Of our social life, is in accordance with the soundest educational principles.

This book presents a series of thought-provoking problems designed to demonstrate the enormous and devastating financial costs of war, both in terms of human life and material resources. By using simple arithmetic operations and familiar examples, the author shows how the funds spent on armaments and military conflicts could be better used to provide for the well-being and progress of humanity. Historical examples from various wars, including the Franco-Prussian War, the World Wars, and the Balkan Wars, serve as grim reminders of the immense toll that war takes on nations and individuals. The author skillfully uses statistics and mathematical calculations to quantify the loss of life, the economic burden, and the societal disruptions caused by these conflicts. Throughout the book, the author emphasizes the importance of fostering international cooperation, understanding, and diplomacy as the only sustainable path to peace and prosperity. The insights presented in this book challenge readers to rethink the prioritization of military spending and inspire them to work towards a more just and equitable world where resources are allocated to the betterment of humankind.
