Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book compares religious philosophies between two major figures in 2nd-century philosophical thought: the Jewish theologian Philo, and medieval Jewish philosopher Maimonides. The author argues that Philo, a Jewish philosopher greatly influenced by Greek philosophy, likely contributed to the development of Maimonides's Jewish religious philosophy during the Middle Ages. Both philosophers attempted to merge religious belief with Greek philosophical traditions, developing similar religious systems with corresponding answers to fundamental questions. Scholars had previously believed that Philo's work had little to no influence on medieval Jewish thought, but this book presents evidence to challenge this assumption, demonstrating his ideas had a lasting impact on religious thought. The book is a significant contribution to the history of philosophy and religion, merging the fields of Jewish theology and Greek philosophy in a new way.
